Artist: David Wesley Black Title: “De Groenebot” Production Notes: I print under my own name. My letterpress is a capable and trusty ‘new style’ Chandler & Price Pilot. I call it Pilot. I make tiny prints and books in a tiny studio, on a third floor, overseen by a small dog with boundary issues. Reduction linoleum cuts are the most fun because it keeps you thinking and planning all the way through. I use oil based - artist grade stone lithography inks without driers or additives so it can be a test of patience waiting for each ink layer to dry just right before you can continue. Something magical happens in the final pass through the press when the print suddenly becomes something more than the sum of its individual layers. We’ve asked the high school students in our class to create their own posters using a similar style. This is my attempt at a mini version of a WPA style print, inspired by a photo I took while on vacation at Yosemite. Artist: Alisa Dix Press: Third Termite Title: Untitled Production Notes: I have several drawers of cuts that were given to me by a member of the Polish Falcons of America, who for years printed a letterpress newspaper at their headquarters here in Pittsburgh. One of the missions of the organization is to promote physical fitness in the Polish community. Many of the images are instructional and show the perfect form of a specific exercise, with dotted lines illustrating the successive steps of the action. I love these pictures! In this piece I cobbled together ten tiny cuts to make this playful little scene. For some of the images I had to skew the paper into the guide pins and block out parts of the cut that I didn’t want to hit. It took ten separate runs on my 12 x 18 C&P to print, with two ink changes along the way. This tiny print measures 2" x 3" and comes with one of our fancy folding display frames. Artist: Heather McLaughlin Press: Flight 64 Title: “Conversations with Peacocks” Production notes: I was printing this at Flight 64 but our heater broke so I switched to Pacific Northwest College of Art (where I work) so the ink would wipe easier! Originally i wanted to use red ink on the blue paper but I couldn’t fit it in. This plate also gave me trouble when my first drawing wasn’t all the way through the ground and nothing etched! Sometimes you just have to take a break and then come back and start all over. It was a “never give up!” moment. Printed at Deep Wood Press on the C&P tabletop. When I was younger, my dad used to cross country ski with us kids on his back and this print is sort-of inspired by that idea. I'm working on a series of some Northern Creatures, trying to create a sort of a northern Michigan type of folklore, or creatures of hot and cold from the north in general. Artist: Charles Overbeck Press: Eberhardt Press Title: “Another Fall” Production Notes: Printed on #110 Sundance Ultra White felt cover with multiple oil-base spot colors on a Ryobi 3302/ltek 3985 two-color offset printing press. Process: 1) Pantone swatches were selected from comparisons to tree leaves. 2) Color separations were hand-drawn with Sharpie paint markers on polyester lithographic plates. 3) After three passes on the press, additional plates were hand-drawn to fill out the composition with several more colors. 4) Thirty 2” X 3” details were cut from the 8.5” X 5.5” run sheets. It looked like a little girl’s. Her name—Lotte Poper—was written in a kind of chicken scratch. It was a woodcut of a very homely swan. Artist: Amy E. Redmond Press: Colt’s Army Press Title: “1 %” Production Notes: About a year ago Brian Bagdonas handed me a font of 30pt Flash, challenged me to use it in a project, laughed maniacally and walked away. And so when I started working on this piece, it was a given that I would start with that. The first 3 passes on this print are 30 pt Flash, set by hand and printed to create a textured background. The 4th pass is a metal cut of a woman on a horse, followed by a 5th pass using a cut of a star, and a 6th for the type. (I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that 8 point Hobo somehow wandered into my studio some time ago, hiding in a case with some other type - however at this small size its venom is harmless, and so I kept it.) The print was designed, typeset, printed, and distributed in one day, with only 1 press clean-up; the colors evolved on press as each pass was printed. Artist: Barbara Tetenbaum Press: Triangular Press Title: “No. 7 Mildred” Production Notes: I used an old murky halftone engraving I found in a small town in Wisconsin and printed it in two colors. Using two different makeready/pressure printing systems, I was able to have parts drop away and parts emphasized, which allowed for some color separation and some color mixing. The border is an early 20th century system I bought from Scotty's collection (Chris and Jules late colleague/friend) and the type is hand-set foundry Latin Elongated.
